The focus of the Haymount Choral Scholars is the study, preparation, and performance of choral music spanning a vast range of musical periods, styles, and cultural origins. The program is designed to train gifted vocal students in grades 9-12 residing in Cumberland County in a community that is committed to excellence in sacred choral music and whose goal is to encourage lifelong choral singing. 

Haymount Choral Scholars are selected by audition and receive a $1,000 scholarship for a ten-month program divided into monthly stipends. The program commences following Labor Day and concludes at the end of June.  During this period, a total of 6 absences from rehearsals and six absences from Sunday services will be permitted. Responsibilities include:

-Wednesday rehearsals, 7-9 pm, as well as others that may be scheduled seasonally. These rehearsals include 90 minutes with the large ensemble and thirty minutes with the select choral scholars only.

                -Attendance at Sunday 11 am services and 10:30 am warm-ups. (10:30 am-noon)

                -Seasonal performances: Christmas Lovefeast (12/13, 4 pm); Living Pictures (3/21,
                4pm); Prelude to Memorial Day Concert (5/23, 4 pm)

-Scholars are expected to live up to high standards regarding punctuality, work habits, vocal preparation, and personal conduct.

In addition to regular and seasonal performance opportunities, the Choral Scholar program offers cultural opportunities as found through church supported programs such as Music for a Great Space that hosts numerous national and international artists each season Additionally, students will be offered cultural opportunities to hear accomplished artists and performances at venues at the famed Duke Chapel.  These opportunities are provided as a benefit and come at no cost to choral scholars.
