Video Presentation:
"Chasing the Dragon: The Life of an Opiate Addict"
Produced by the FBI

Learn more about opioid and heroin addiction through the powerful journey shared in this video documentary. Due to graphic images and explicit language, it is strongly advised that children not attend this program

Do you know what it looks like when someone is using heroin or other opiates? What are the signs? What are the effects? What should you do? This community talk is designed to resource parents, teachers, social workers, school employees, and others who work with children and youth.

 Panelists and Presenters Include:
  • Dr. Darlene Hopkins, PhD - Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist, Fayetteville Family Life Center
  • Dr. Horace Long, Pediatrician - Medical Effects of Opiates
  • Elizabeth Ramos - Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist
  • Captain Paul - Fayetteville Police Department
  • Guest Speaker on recovery from opiate addiction

Two recent news stories highlight the rapid increase and devastating results of this dangerous trend.

  • In a story on April 16, 2016, CBS North Carolina listed Fayetteville as 18th on the list of the worst cities in North Carolina for opioid abuse. From the story: "CBS North Carolina pulled the numbers and found heroin deaths in our state have skyrocketed more than 584%"
  • In February of 2017, ABC11 ran a investigative report on heroin addiction in families. They spoke with four parents of addicts to hear their stories and their struggles. Watch the story at this link:  "Heroin? Not My Child!"

We hope that you will make plans to join us, and invite someone to come with you. Again, due to the graphic nature of the video and other information shared, we strongly advise that children not attend.

Haymount UMC is located at 1700 Fort Bragg Road. The New Life Center best accessed through the Cape Fear Avenue entrance and parking lot. Signs will be posted to help you find your way.
